An app that revolutionises the installation process for a laser communication device
Centauri On-device App
Product design, UX, UI, user research
The challenge
Firstly, users encountered difficulties while trying to download the existing mobile app for installing Centauri, a pair of laser communication devices. Secondly, as users did not have internet access prior to installation, which is crucial for establishing connectivity, added to the complexity.
Lastly, improvements were necessary in the alignment experience, where the two devices tries to establish a connection between each other during installation, to make it easier and smoother experience for the user.
What we did
Designed a web application that establishes a direct connection with the physical product on-site, eliminating the need for downloading an app or relying on internet connectivity to initiate installation.
Implemented features such as helpful visual guides and an improved camera UI, aimed at providing users with clear instructions and simplifying the installation process. These significantly improved the overall installation process.
Research
Reviewed the existing app to understand current limitations and looked at industry deployment examples.
User personas
Initiated an effort to construct user personas representing potential users of this product. Due to the constraints of key stakeholders’ availability, organising a workshop proved challenging. As a result, the personas were developed through in-depth research into the attributes and traits of each potential user profile. Initially, the task was tackled individually before sharing the personas with the broader team for collaborative feedback and further improvement.
User journey mapping
Initiated the mapping the user journey experience during deployment, aiming to gain a deeper understanding and identify improvements that can be incorporated into this app, ultimately making the user experience even more streamlined.

Wire flow
Constructed a wire flow of the new app and subjected it to a series of reviews, resulting in numerous iterations aimed at enhancing its usability and overall experience.
Initial ideation
First alignment improvement idea inspired by a first person shooter video game interface, that guides user on where to move Centauri during the alignment process of the installation.
Initial design prototype
A guided prototype was developed to demonstrate the user interface and experience of the new app to the team prior to iterations and actual development.
Usability tests
Conducted a series of internal and external usability tests with the initial working prototype. Gathered valuable feedback during these sessions and incorporated it into several iterative rounds of improvements before releasing an alpha version to customers for more feedback.
User insights repository
To ensure effective tracking and management of feedback, an initiative to establish a user insights repository was kickstarted. This repository serves as a centralised location to capture and track feedback from various sources, including these usability tests conducted.

Surveys
Surveys were distributed to a selectively chosen group of customers who were willing to participate in the alpha version test of the app. The obtained results seamlessly integrated with the recently established user insights repository.
