A sleek industrial design concept for a next-generation space telescope enclosure
Space Telescope Enclosure Design
Industrial design
The objective
To design an enclosure for a space telescope that achieves a balance between functionality and a sleek, futuristic aesthetic.
Research
Despite a lack of prior knowledge in industrial design, dedicated time was invested in learning about the principles and best practices of this field in order to quickly embark on the project.
Seeking inspiration from game design, particularly sci-fi weapons and vehicles with their sleek, minimal, and futuristic shapes, became the envisioned design direction for the enclosure.
Ideation
Due to a lack of familiarity with 3D programs, the ideas were conveyed through the medium of paper craft. Presented them to the team, resulting in a collective agreement on a few chosen designs that would proceed to the final version.
Prototype
After undergoing multiple rounds of review, the team reached a consensus on a selected design. The team proceeded to print a 3D version of both the enclosure design and the telescope at a 1:10 scale to assess the design’s functionality and performance.
Final design
Following numerous iterations driven by additional requirements and modifications to the telescope, a cardboard prototype was meticulously developed to scale. This crucial step was taken to ensure the functionality and viability of the design before moving forward with the production phase.
Closing thoughts
Despite the task being beyond the scope of my assigned responsibilities, and with limited time availability during work hours, I willingly dedicated my personal time after work to make it happen. Despite the extra effort involved, I found the whole experience to be truly enjoyable and felt a genuinely grateful for the opportunity to take on something new and exciting. Even my furry team mates agree.
